Behind the Pen

The Super-Duper Mario and Sonic World history:

Somewhere in February, I started the foundation of the greatest(?) cartoon ever created in the history of mankind. But believe it or not, I did not even intend to create a series with Mario or Sonic. This is what happened.

Originally called “The Super Mario World,” I drew random pencil comics about Mario on lined paper for the entertainment of a small group of friends. I never thought it would evolve into something that takes chunks of my time today. But one day, I had an idea: What if, instead of simply making comics and then throwing them out, I made a collection in pen? So I replicated some of my pencil comics with pen on printer paper, hole-punched them into a binder, and even made a cover. It was then called “The Super Mario World.”

It instantly became a success. My friends loved it, my peers loved it, even some of my teachers liked it. But I realized something after putting Sonic the Hedgehog as a guest character in one of the comics.

The original comic only had three characters: Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi. I noticed that over time, jokes got extremely dry, and ideas quickly ran short. I realized that the comic would definitely not survive with only three characters. So then I thought, “what if… Sonic the Hedgehog and his buddies joined the cast?”

So I added Sonic and Tails. The result was perfect. I had a steady amount of ideas, especially adding Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Blaze the Cat (now one of the core characters), and Silver the Hedgehog. Now I was happy, and everybody was happy (although people kept asking who Blaze and Silver were).

My collections are consisted of “Volumes,” which are sort of like years. Volume #1 started in early March, and ended in late June. Now I am on Volume #2, which started much earlier (mid September), and plan continue to create volumes all the way up to Volume #5 (in my senior year).

Now I work for my high school newspaper. It has been well-recieved by everybody, and I continue to work on this wonderful art form.
